Karamea is the northernmost town on the West Coast, set on a fertile coastal plain at the literal end of the road where State Highway 67 stops and the wilderness begins. It is the southern trailhead of the 80-kilometre Heaphy Track, which has linked the Coast with Golden Bay since 1893, and the gateway to the Ōparara Basin where 35-million-year-old limestone arches span a tannin-stained river deep in Kahurangi National Park. Māori passed through here for centuries on the pounamu trails, and the first European farming settlement took hold in 1874.
