Fox Glacier is a small South Westland township in glacier country, known to Māori as Weheka and renamed in the 1940s after the ice river that von Haast had named for premier William Fox in 1872. Just down the road lies Lake Matheson, formed as the glacier retreated 14,000 years ago and famous for the mirror reflections of Aoraki and Tasman it holds on a still dawn. The village grew from the 1920s as the Sullivan and Williams farming families turned glacier hospitality into a trade, opening the Fox Glacier Hostel in 1928.
