Manaia is a small town on the Waimate Plains of South Taranaki, named after the rangatira Hukunui Manaia and watched over by the cone of Taranaki Maunga. Its square is anchored by the 1880 Manaia redoubt and watchtower, built during the tense years of Parihaka and the passive resistance led by Te Whiti o Rongomai. The town has been a one-business bread capital since 1923, when Yarrows Bakers set up here and grew into one of the district's biggest employers.
