About Southland
Southland (Murihiku) is the southernmost region, where Invercargill (Waihōpai) serves a landscape of rich dairy and sheep country, the fiords of Fiordland around Te Anau and Milford Sound (Piopiotahi), and Stewart Island (Rakiura) across the strait. Bluff oysters, the Catlins coast and a famously straight-talking local culture set the tone. Farming, food production, tourism, aquaculture and trades keep its towns running.
