Pakuranga is a large East Auckland suburb that grew rapidly through the 1950s and 1960s as a dormitory community, when Fletcher Construction built thousands of homes and opened the Pakuranga Plaza shopping centre in 1965. Its sportsgrounds at Lloyd Elsmore Park, opened in 1981 and named for a long-serving Manukau mayor, host cricket, rugby, hockey and netball, and the adjoining Howick Historical Village preserves the area's colonial past. Bounded by the Tamaki River estuary, it is a settled, family-oriented suburb at the centre of east Auckland's retail and recreation.
