Raetihi is a small Ruapehu town founded in 1892 on the Waimarino block, which boomed as a sawmilling centre with over fifty mills working within a dozen kilometres of the town by the mid-1920s. In March 1918 huge forest fires swept the district, destroying much of Raetihi along with surrounding mills and farms. Today it is a quiet farming and market-gardening town just west of Ohakune, a handy base for the western side of Tongariro National Park.
